46,000 POUNDS OF GRAPES MAKE MESS OF ROAD, TRAFFIC

An overturned tractor-trailer at the Wildwood Road bridge snarled traffic for about nine miles on the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 Wednesday afternoon, state police said.

Calvin Newton Gregory Jr., 45, of Hagerstown, Md., apparently lost control of his rig, spilling about 46,000 pounds of grapes onto the roadway, said Trooper David Edmondson. Gregory was charged with reckless driving.

Gregory was not injured. A passenger in the truck sustained minor injuries, but police did not have the person's name.

The accident closed the northbound lanes between exits 137 and 140 from 2:15 to 4:50 p.m., forcing traffic onto roads in Salem.
