TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED WITH HIT-AND-RUN

Police arrested a 40-year-old Southeast Roanoke man and charged him with felony hit-and-run Thursday.

Barry Lee Johnson of the 900 block of Tazewell Avenue is suspected of hitting a motorcyclist, seriously injuring him.

The motorcyclist, Charles A. Turner, remained in very serious condition late Thursday in the neurotrauma intensive care unit at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor.

About 11:22 p.m. Wednesday, Turner, 35, of the 800 block of Dale Avenue Southeast, was traveling east on Elm Avenue when he was hit by a pickup truck, police said. Turner suffered extensive internal injuries, according to a nursing supervisor.

Two state troopers later located Johnson's truck at 11th Street and Bullitt Avenue Southeast. The vehicle had fresh damage and blood on the left front, police said.

Roanoke traffic bureau investigators filed charges against Johnson Thursday.
