Free vaccination clinic for children

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Radford Health Department will conduct a free child-immunization clinic Tuesday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Women's Health Education in the New River Valley Mall.

Vaccination against diptheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT); polio (OPV); measles, mumps and rubella (MMR); bacterial meningitis (Hib); and hepatitis B will be offered.

Immunization is required for children entering day care or school. Parents will be provided with written documentation of the immunizations their children receive.

Application deadline for roster of artists

CHRISTIANSBURG - Artists have until Sept. 1 to file applications to be included in the roster of Artists-in-Education, a program sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Schools and other organizations use the roster to select artists to participate in residencies for the 1996-1997 school year. Only those artists on the roster are eligible.

Artists in the literary, performing and visual arts may apply. Statewide panels will review applications.

New Miss Virginia to appear on WPSK

PULASKI - The new Miss Virginia, Amber Medlin, will be a guest Monday on the "Holstein & Co." morning radio show on Eagle Country 107 WPSK (107.1 FM).

Medlin, a Radford University graduate, will appear live on the program between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Communication disorders to be topic

RADFORD - During August on Radford University's "Community Speaking" (American Cable Entertainment Channel 9), the focus is on communication disorders. Host Bill Yerrick talks with John Pettit, chairman of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Radford University, and Deborah Seyfried, coordinator of the university's audiology clinic.

"Community Speaking" is broadcast Sundays, 6 p.m., Tuesdays, 5 p.m., Wednesdays, noon, and Thursdays, 7 p.m.

Seat on planning commission to be filled

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will make an appointment to the following comission:

New River Valley Planning District Commission - the commission is responsible for administering a comprehensive regionwide plan for growth and development. Members establish policy and delegate duties to staff members through an executive director. The appointment will fill an unexpired term through June 30 1998. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Commission Office in Radford.

Montgomery County citizens who are registered voters and in good tax standing should submit a letter of intent to Betty Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073-0806. Applicants should apply no later than Friday, Aug. 18.

Live broadcast from Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG - WKEX (AM1430) will broadcast during Steppin' Out from downtown Blacksburg Friday and Saturday in front of Mish Mish. The Happy Clown will be on hand to entertain kids and individuals can register for free prizes.

Different look at `Sleeping Beauty'

FLOYD - There's a new twist to the plot of the "Sleeping Beauty" fairytale.

The Montgomery County-Floyd Regional Library invites children to attend the program "Don't kiss Sleeping Beauty, she's got really bad breath."

Children attending the program will make a variety of paper bag puppets, which they will use in their production of various frog tales.

The program will be at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library in Floyd Thursday at 4 p.m.

Meeting scheduled for golf team tryouts

BLACKSBURG - There will be an organizational meeting for students who are interested in trying out for the Blacksburg High School golf team.

Farmer's Market is moving for a day

BLACKSBURG - To accommodate the annual Steppin' Out festival, the Downtown Blacksburg's Farmer's Market plans to temporarily relocate Aug. 5, only, to the National Bank of Blacksburg parking lot, Roanoke and South Main streets.

This is across the street from the usual location at Draper Road and Roanoke streets.

The Farmer's Market returns to its regular location Aug. 9.

Language Institute director interviewed

BLACKSBURG - "Spotlight on Blacksburg" this month on WTOB (Blacksburg Cable channel 2) features an interview with Jeanie Owens Straw, who directs the Blacksburg Language Institute for Children.

Other segments take a look at renovations at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library in Blacksburg and cover the summer activities of the town's Public Works Department.

Grandparents sought as volunteers

DUBLIN - New River Community College is forming a volunteer group of grandparents who can serve on an advisory committee to plan a week of special events for grandparents and their grandchildren for summer 1996.

CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for football coaches for youths in Riner or Shawsville.
