PEMBROKE GETS GRANT FOR PARK

Pembroke will use a $50,000 grant to acquire and develop a small "pocket park" on 1.1 acres adjacent to and just up the river from the Virginia 623/New River Bridge.

The money comes from the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries.

The park, to be named A.H. Snidow Park in honor of its former owner, will offer a canoe/john boat launching area, fishing dock, picnic area, gazebo picnic shelter and parking for up to 30 cars.

The entire facility will be handicap accessible, making it the first such facility on the New River in Giles County. The park will be connected to the main town park by a pedestrian walk along Doe Creek.

The grant represents 75 percent of the estimated costs for the $67,500 project. The National Committee for the New River has contributed $1,000 toward the project for the purchase of a two-year option on the property.

An additional $2,500 has been pledged from Apco's "Partners in Rivers" program, and the Float Fishermen of Virginia pledged $250.

The town will seek the remainder of its funding throughout the county and in the form of donated materials and services.

The park land will be acquired this fall, and the facility should be completed by June 30, 1996.
