ADVISER'S DEATH INVESTIGATED

Authorities are investigating as a suicide the death of a political commentator and adviser whose clients included Vice President Al Gore and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer.

Duane Garrett's body was spotted in the water by a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge on Wednesday and identified Thursday. He had been facing financial trouble and claims he sold fake sports memorabilia, the San Francisco Examiner reported Friday.

Garrett, 48, told friends recently he was financially overextended because of a downturn in the sports memorabilia market.

Garrett co-directed campaigns for a number of leading state and national Democrats, including Walter Mondale, Bruce Babbitt, former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, and Boxer and Feinstein.
