AGNEW WILL DEFEND NRVS TITLE TONIGHT

Racing action returns to the New River Valley Speedway tonight for a 250-lap Late Model Stock Car race sponsored by WDBJ 7.

The winner will receive $4,000. WDBJ 7 will award $1,000 to the leader at the halfway point.

Defending champion Jeff Agnew, as well as Ronnie Thomas, Tony McGuire and Michael Ritch, are among the featured drivers.

The schedule also includes a 35-lap Limited Sportsman race and a 25-lap race for Mini Stock and Pure Stock drivers.

WDBJ 7 will air the Late Model race live at 9 p.m. Gates will open at 1:30 p.m., with practice beginning at 3:30. Qualifying starts at 6 with the first green flag at 8. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

In other sports in the region:

Guilford College is the preseason favorite to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference football championship, according to a poll of the league's coaches.

The Quakers return 27 players who started in the 1994 season, including ODAC player of the year David Heggie, now a sophomore.

The coaches picked Washington and Lee to finish fourth.

``I put us at `3,''' said the Generals' interim head coach, Frank Miriello. ``The kids make me feel that way.``

Defending champion Emory & Henry was chosen for second place while Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney were third and fifth, respectively. Bridgewater, under new coach Mike Clark, a former assistant at Virginia Tech and VMI, was the sixth-place selection.

The Washington Mustangs defeated the Roanoke RiverDawgs 2-1 in a United States Interregional Soccer League game in Washington.

The Mustangs led 1-0 at halftime but Roanoke's Eduardo Wissar scored on an assist by Ian Spooner three minutes into the second half to tie the score. Washington then put away the game with another goal three minutes later.

The Star City Striders are sponsoring the NationsBank Olympic Day 5K Run today at 8 a.m. at the Rivers Edge Sports Complex. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. at Rivers Edge. All proceeds will benefit the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team.

The Roanoke Valley Gators Swim Team has several winners at the Virginia Long Course Junior Olympics at Hargrave Military Academy.

Lindsay Hock, 10, set a Junior Olympic record in the 100 breast stroke with a top 16 time of 1 minute, 27.43 seconds. She also won the 200 individual medley in a top 16 time of 2:46.62 and placed second in the 50 freestyle.

Ashley Neighbors, 12, won the 100 breast stroke in a top 16 time of 1:19.85. Martha Snead, 12, won the 50 freestyle in 29.31.

Trey Clower, 14, of the Roanoke Country Club, shot a 76 at Colonial Hills Golf Club in Lynchburg to win the 14-15 classification of the Central Virginia Junior Golf Championship. He began the tournament by carding a 74 at London Downs on Thursday.

Tanner Duus scored the sole goal for the Roanoke Star under-15 soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Bramfdon of Germany in the preliminary round of the Dana Cup in Hjorring, Denmark. The Star also tied Herdik of Norway 0-0. The Star plays a team from Finland in today's qualifying round. The Dana Cup is the second-largest youth tournament in the world, boasting 752 teams from 47 countries.

Rocky Mount Post 6 advanced to the final of the Blue Ridge District American Legion baseball tournament with a 7-3 victory over Martinsville.

Gray Hodges and Jimmy Scott led Post 6 with two hits each. One of Scott's hits was a two-run homer. Brian Strong got the victory, striking out 11 in seven innings. Rocky Mount takes on Halifax, a 19-1 winner over Danville, tonight at 8 p.m. in Rocky Mount.
