ALTIZER, Marvin E., (``Smokie""), 70, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 27, 1995 in a local hospital. He retired from Stuart McGuire and worked for N & W Railroad. He was a decorated World War II Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine E. Altizer; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Delia Altizer; one daughter, Marie E. Altizer; four grandchildren, Gabriel Gomez, Michael Gomez, Meagan Altizer, Jarhett Altizer; his mother, Bede A. Jones; one sister and brother-in-law, Thelma A. and Dennis W. Body, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives will be received Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. with services being held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 1995 at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Pastor T. R. King officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Heart Association.

BAYES, Michael David, 34, of Marion, died Thursday, July 27, 1995 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Survivors include his parents, David and Pearl Bayes, Marion; one son, Joseph Wade Bayes, Christiansburg; one brother, Larry Wayne Bayes, Sugar Grove. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Marion Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Willard Reedy and the Rev. Roy Nunn officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Chapel.

BOWIE, Patricia O'Brien, 64, Chevy Chase, Md., died on Sunday, July 23, 1995, of diabetes. Mrs. Bowie, who settled in the Washington, D.C. area in 1950, was born in Miami and was a native of Roanoke. She attended Jefferson High School and the University of Virginia's Nursing School. In the mid-1960s she was a sales associate with Korezendorfer Realty. At the time of her death, Mrs. Bowie w as a member of the boards of the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries, the Montgomery General Thrift Shop and she was a past president of the Suburban Hospital Auxiliary who had done more than 11,500 hours of volunteer work at the hospital since 1988. She also served as adult director of the Montgomery County YWCA, and in the 1960's she taught Sunday school classes at Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Florence Crittenton Home Circle, the Optimists Mrs. Club of Washington, the Women's Club of Chevy Chase, Md. and Columbia Country Club. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Edward Lee Bowie of Chevy Chase, Md.; three children, Kevin L. Bowie of Olney, Md., Leslie B. Masler of Oakland, Md. and Army Major Edward Lee Bowie, Jr. of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; a sister, Jean F. Shank of Martinsville; a brother, William W. O'Brien of McLean; and six grandchildren. A memorial mass was offered at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Bethesda, Md., on Wednesday, July 26, at 12 noon. CAKE, Walter Jerome, 85, of Thaxton and Bedford, died Friday, July 28, 1995 in Bedford. He was born in Norfolk, Va. May 5, 1910, a son of the late Walter Percy Cake and Lena Blanche Epes Cake. He was a graduate of New York University and a retired Aeronautical Engineer with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corp. He was a collector of antique cars and had a keen interent in UFO information. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Harvey Cake; two sons, Stephen Cake of San Francisco, Henry E. Cake of Bedford; a daughter, Deborah Cake of Arlington, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Mary Keith Harvey Penn of Richmond; a grandson, Carlos Cake; and five stepgrandchildren, Jeffrey Harvey, Melissa Harvey, MacDonand Lee Harvey, Whitney Overby and Mary Wade Overby. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 31, 1995 at 4 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. James A Creasy officiating. CHISOM, Otha Whitfield, 76, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 27, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Doris Webster Chisom; a son, Don R. Chisom; a daughter, Sandrel K. Richards; brothers, Howard L. Chisom, Wilbert E. Chisom, all of Roanoke, Thomas C. Chisom, Salem, Oscar R. Chisom, Vinton; sisters, Leah Powers, Vinton, Omega Chandler, Goodview, Shirley Thomas, Roanoke, Emogene Preston, Salem; a step son, Len Frank; a step daughter, Jeanette Ripley, both of Baltimore, Md.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel by Dr. Archie (``Chip"") Corbin and the Rev. Bobby Harris officating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. CORREIA, James W., (""Jim""), of Roanoke, joined his loving companion the deceased David Issac in his transition from this life to the next at 55 in his hometown at New Bedford, Mass. on Wednesday, July 26, 1995. James was the beloved son of the late Augustus J. Correia. Surviving are his mother, Naomi M. Correia; his birth mother, Doris Little; his sisters, Marie Elaine Pacheco, Brenda Moniz, Kathy Motta, Lorraine Fontes, Darlene Medeiros; his brothers, Wayne L. Correia, Daniel J. Correia, Stephen Casey, all of Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews. Also survived by special friends, Pat Eby, Michael Sizemore, among many friends throughout the Roanoke area. James was very active with the Roanoke AIDS Society and had lectured on AIDS awareness and prevention. He was also involved with Hospice. He was a member of the Unity Church of the Roanoke Valley, he was recently retired from the Norfolk Southern Railway after more than 20 years of service. He also served in the U.S. Air Force for several years. He lived most of his life in the Virginia area. Flowers or memorials may be made to the Roanoke AIDS Project (RAT) or the Unity Church of the Roanoke Valley. A memorial service will be at the Unity Church of the Roanoke Valley 8 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Jim Fisher officiating.

LAUGHON, W. Warwick, 86, of Salem, died Friday, July 28, 1995. He was retired from Norfolk & Western Railway. LOGAN, Robert Henry Jr., 69, of Salem, died Friday, July 28, 1995. He was the owner of Logan Furniture. A native of Salem, he was the son of the late Robert Henry Logan, Sr., and Hardenia Fletcher Logan Mr. Logan was a member and elder of Salem Presbyterian Church; a charter member and past president of Salem Rotary Club, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a graduate of the University of Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Cook Logan; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Logan and Frederick A. Tanner, Jr., Charlotte, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, James F. and Nancy H. Logan, Pulaski; and grandson, Rick and Reed Tanner, Charlotte, N.C. Graveside services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 31, 1995, by the Revs. Dean Lindsey and Collier Harvey in Sherwood Memorial Park. MAHAFFEY, Russell Eugene, 75, of Ripplemead, died Monday morning at his home. Born in Premier, W. Va., he was a son of the late Charlie F. and Edith Lucas Mahaffey. Russell was a veteran of the U.S. Army in WW II, was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, was retired as an insurance agent, and was an expert gardener and tinkerer. He was preceded in death by a son, Sherwood Mahaffey. Surviving are his wife, Betty Shaver Mahaffey; a daughter, Janice Mitchell-Kendrick, of Richmond; a grandson, Michael C. Mitchell, Jr, of Roanoke; two brothers, Chester Mahaffey and Wade Mahaffey, both of Washington, D.C.; six sisters, Lillian Ratcliff, Pembroke, Phyllis Beal, Floyd, Betty Dagenhart, Roanoke, Shirley Keane, Laurel, Md., Connie Allen, Brandywine, Md., and Pauline Meredith, Anaheim, Ca. Graveside services were conducted Friday, July 28, 1995 at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with the Rev. Eddie Kendall, the American Legion, and VFW off iciating. McNEIL, Violet Ruth, 92, of Christiansburg, died Friday, July 28, 1995, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home. Arrangements are being handled by the Richardson-Horne Funeral home, where the family will receive friends on Sunday.

NANCE, Lee Edward, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 1995. He was preceded in death by six brothers; and one sister. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Richard Price; brother, Hubert Nance; five neices and nephews, all of Roanoke; a host of other relatives and friends. OGBURN, James Melville, 57, of Crockett, died Wednesday, July 26, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Dunford Ogburn, of Roanoke. A Graveside service will be held Saturday, July 29, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, conducted by Pastor Gary Kelly. SISSON, Margaret Beckner, 62, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 28, 1995. She was a member of West Salem Baptist Church and had been a member at Oakland Baptist for many years. She recently retired after 28 years of service from Norfolk Southern Corp. She is survived by her husband, John David Sisson; daughter and son-in-law, Michael and Renee Slaughter; daughter, Lisa Sisson; two grandchildren, Justin and Melodie Slaughter; brother and sister-in-law Shelbourne and Minota Beckner; sister and brother-in-law Theresa and Davy Whitmire, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at the Lotz Salem Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 31, 1995 at West Salem Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael L. Slaughter and the Rev. Kelly Dampeer officiating. SMITH, Ethel Y., 92, of Floyd, passed away at her home Friday, July 28, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. P. Smith. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by one daughter, Geneva S., Knowles, Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Dianne Simpkins, Rocky Gap, Larry Knowles, Riner; three beloved great-grandchildren, Courtney, Christian, and Patrick Simpkins, Rocky Gap; two half brothers, David Yeatts, Charlottesville, Paul Yeatts, Texas; one half sister, Estella Whitlock, Floyd; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Lynn Schlapfer, Lincoln Park, N.J.; friends and neighbors. THORNE, Melvin E. Sr., 63, of Narrows, died Thursday, July 27, 1995 in a Pearisburg, Va. hospital. He was a former employee with the Town of Narrows and had served in the United States Army and Marines. He was born in Giles County on May 30, 1932 and was the son of Clarence C. and Ethel Wilkerson Thorne of Narrows. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice Fleeman, Betty Farmer and Janice Ratcliffe, and a brother, Arnold Lee Thorne. He is survived by his wife, Joan E. Thorne, Narrows; five sons, Melvin E. Throne Jr., Rich Creek, Robin Thorne, Mike Thorne, Mark Thorne, Chris Thorne, all of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Roxanne M. Daniels, Cathy Gurley and Tammy Piechocki, all of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Lawrence E. Thorne, Aubrey N. Thorne and Rocky A. Thorne, all of Narrows; a sister, Patricia A. Barnette, Narrows; and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral services wil l be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 1995, in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows.
