FIVE CCA MARLINS QUALIFY FOR ZONES

The Carter Center Aquatic Marlins had five swimmers qualify to compete in the Long-Course Eastern Zones meet after placing at the Virginia Junior Olympics Long-Course Swimming Championships at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham.

Tommy Rappold, Blair Huffman, Laura Dichtel, Molly Henderson and Trent Johnson will swim for the Virginia team at the Eastern Zone meet held on Aug.9-12 in Buffalo, N.Y. Another swimmer, Mandy Lippitt, will be going to the Junior Nationals East held on Aug.8-12 in Orlando, Fla.

Rappold, who competed in the boys' 11-12 division, finished second at the Junior Olympics in the 100 freestyle. Dichtel came in first in the 200 backstroke and Huffman finished second in the 200 breast stroke in the girls' 13-14 division. In the 15-and-over division, Henderson was second in the 200 backstroke and Johnson was third in the 100 freestyle.

Other swimmers also fared well. Lindsay Hock came away with three second-place finishes in the girls' 10-and-under category (100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 50 backstroke). Sarah Jane Bova finished fourth in the 50 backstroke in the girls' 11-12 division.

The Roanoke Star under-15 soccer team lost to Fredlink of Finland 1-0 in the qualifying round of the Dana Cup in Hjorring, Denmark. The Star lost despite outshooting Fredlink 12-2.
