The only UVa signees who did not report were tight end-linebacker J.J. McQueen from High Point, N.C., and defensive lineman Mo Anderson from Bluestone by way of Fork Union Military Academy.
Anderson enrolled in January and participated in spring drills, but was placed on academic probation at the end of the semester. He was awaiting word Monday on an appeal to have his eligibility reinstated.
Anderson's plan is to enroll for the fall semester at Virginia, whether he can play football or not. He could be redshirted this fall and still have four seasons of eligibility because he entered school at mid-year.
McQueen, named to play in the Shrine Bowl pitting all-star teams from North Carolina and South Carolina, said Monday that he is leaning toward going to Hargrave Military Academy over a scholarship offer from East Carolina, where he would be required to sit out the 1995 season as a ``partial'' qualifier.
Coach George Welsh said as many as five or six of the freshmen could play this fall. Positions where UVa needs immediate help include linebacker and tight end. There also might be some playing time available for a running back.
``In the old days, when you had four days of practice, you'd practice the freshmen for two [or] three practices, then work them for three days where they could help you the most,'' said Welsh.
``This year, we'll just have to put them where we think we need them or where they want to play.''
Two of the walk-ons are from Roanoke, quarterback Hal Johnson from North Cross and All-Timesland offensive lineman Jeff Painter from Northside. Johnson and Painter were the only first-year walk-ons from Virginia invited to join the team for the start of drills.
UVa begins the season Aug.26 in Ann Arbor, Mich., against the University of Michigan in the Pigskin Classic.
