DIXON'S SINGLE LIFTS SALEM TO 5-4 WIN

Colin Dixon delivered a run-producing single in the 10th inning Monday night to help the Salem Avalanche defeat Winston-Salem 5-4 in Carolina League baseball.

Dixon's single plated Edgard Velasquez, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Avalanche overcame a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the seventh after being limited to just one hit through the first six innings by Warthogs starting pitcher Jason Robbins.

In the seventh, singles by Dixon and Brian Culp and a walk to Forry Wells loaded the bases with nobody out. Keith Grunewald doubled to left to plate a pair of runs and he and Wells scored when Winston-Salem shortstop Ricky Magdaleno threw wildly to first after fielding a grounder.

The Warthogs tied the score at 4 in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch-hit single by Mike Meggars off Avalanche reliever Curt Conley. Salem starter Matt Pool departed with a 4-3 lead, but ended a frustrating month of July without a decision in his six starts.

Winston-Salem built its 3-0 lead with a run in the second inning and a two-run home run by Aaron Boone, his ninth of the season, in the fourth.

Matt Aminoff (3-5) picked up the victory in relief and Brendan Donnelly (0-2) was saddled with the loss.

NOTE: Avalanche owner Kelvin Bowles said a decision could be made as early as today on whether the new Salem Memorial Stadium will be ready in time for the club's next homestand.

"Right now, the status is day-to-day," said Bowles. "But I need to know something soon so we can do some advertising."

Delays in construction and the delivery of materials have postponed the opening three times, most recently for last week's homestand. The Avalanche's next homestand begins on Monday.
