FRIDAY'S editorial, "The child-killer is no stranger," erred in saying Virginia law does not allow schools to check on the educational progress of home-schooled children.

Valerie Smelser, a 12-year-old who was killed in her home, had no contact with school workers who would have been required to report suspected abuse because her mother had received a religious exemption from school for her children, a separate and absolute exemption.
