Beagle led the NCAA Division II this past season with a strikeouts-per-inning ratio of 12.5 for nine innings while pitching for South Carolina-Aiken. He has been pitching in Connecticut this summer as a reliever in the Cape Cod League.
Beagle led Cave Spring to the Group AAA state finals in 1989 and was selected an all-state pitcher that season. He attended Dundalk Junior College in Maryland before transferring to South Carolina-Aiken.
He will sign today with the Elmira Pioneers of the Class A New York-Penn League.

Joe Taylor, who this year will guide Hampton University into its first season of Division I football, will be among the guests next Wednesday night at a meeting of the Roanoke Valley Sports Club.

Cameron Yancey of Blackstone shot a 1-over-par 73 to hang on to a one-stroke lead in the Virginia State Golf Association Junior boys' championship at Kingsmill Golf Club in Williamsburg on Tuesday.
Phil Bowers of Harrisonburg carded a 70 to finish second at 143. Shane Foster of Earlysville is third at 144, followed by Kevin Miller of Virginia Beach at 146.
Lee Fisher of Bedford is tied for seventh at 150 after shooting a 79 and Roanokers Justin Young, Lee Taylor and Jason Orlando are bunched at 151 with two others.

Roanoke's Jacob Jarrett shot an opening-round 79 in the ClubCorp Junior Players' championship on The Homestead's Lower Cascades course in Hot Springs.
Jarrett, playing in the 15-16 division, is 10 strokes back of co-leaders Jason Bleau and Andrew Saunders in the 54-hole tournament.
Mark Fry from Roanoke Country Club had a 72 and Jeff Sprinkel from Blue Hills shot a 73 Monday in the Mid-Atlantic PGA assistants' championship at Ford's Colony in Williamsburg.
Several Roanoke swimmers placed during the first day of competition at the Long Course Swimming Nationals in Nashville, Tenn. Jamie Spradlin finished seventh in the women's 400-meter freestyle in 4:35.29 and Matt McCleod placed seventh in the men's 100 breast stroke. Brian Finucane was 10th in the boys' 400 freestyle and John Smith placed 11th in the boys' 200 individual medley. The team of John Smith, Matt McCleod, Brian Finucane and Patrick O'Neill set a team record of 1:54.79 in the boys' 200 individual medley.
