AVALANCHE SLIPS PAST WINSTON-SALEM 3-2

Colin Dixon cranked a two-run home run to center field in the ninth inning to lift Salem to a 3-2 win over Winston-Salem in Carolina League action on Tuesday night.

Dixon's homer came with two outs off Warthogs starter Chris Reed (7-6). Reed allowed an infield hit to short by Chris Sexton, but Vincente Garcia's bunt attempt failed and Brian Culp flied out to left. Dixon then followed with his second homer to give the Avalanche a 3-1 lead.

Reed had given up just two hits through the eighth inning. He walked two and struck out eight.

The Warthogs (16-22) opened the scoring in the second inning, when Robbie Robertson singled to right, knocking in Aaron Boone for his 29th RBI. Boone had singled to right, stolen second and advanced to third on a groundout by Paul Bako.

The Avalanche (20-17) responded in the fifth when Keith Grunewald homered with one out to tie the score.

Boone homered to left off reliever Jason Dietrich's first pitch in the bottom of the ninth to pull the Warthogs to 3-2. Dietrich walked Bako and was relieved by Scott LaRock, who got Robertson to pop out and fanned Ricky Magdaleno and Donald Broach to record his fourth save.

Doug Crowther (2-3) picked up the win for Salem, striking out five and walking one in eight innings of work. Both of Crowther's wins have come against the Warthogs.

Game three of the four-game series is tonight at 7:05 with Salem left-hander Doug Million (4-4, 5.45 ERA) taking on Winston-Salem right-hander Kurt Lyons (6-8, 3.19).
