CUSTIS MAY PLAY WITH U.S. TEAM

Virginia Tech's Ace Custis, originally chosen as an alternate, has been invited to practice with the basketball team that will represent the United States in the World University Games later this summer.

Practices are scheduled Aug.12-19 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The World University Games will be staged in Fukuoka, Japan from Aug.24-Sept.2.

After 48 players took part in tryouts at Colorado Springs in June, a 12-man team was selected and Custis was chosen as an alternate.

Florida coach Lon Kruger is serving as head coach of the World University Games team with Rod Baker of California-Irvine, former Radford coach Oliver Purnell of Dayton and Bob Ryan of Wisconsin-Platteville as assistants.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Calvin Hill will be the guest speaker at the Radford University Athletic Association Banquet on Aug.17 in the university's Muse Hall Banquet Room.

In conjunction with Hill's appearance, the university also will unveil its new athletics Hall of Fame. The charter class for the Hall will include five members, and induction ceremonies for former Radford athletes and coaches will become part of the tradition of the annual summer banquet.

Hill was the Cowboys` first-round draft choice out of Yale University in 1969. He spent six seasons with the Cowboys before later playing for the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and the Honolulu Hawaiians of the World Football League.

He has become a leading advocate for athletes and education, and serves as a consultant for many national organizations and businesses.

The banquet is open to members of the association who contribute to the Highlander athletic program`s scholarship fund. For information on the association or the banquet, please call (540) 831-5108.
