PAVING TO CLOSE DRILLFIELD DRIVE

Virginia Tech is closing the road that circles the Drillfield for a week for paving starting Sunday at midnight. Weather permitting, Drillfield Drive will reopen Aug. 13.

The paving schedule should go like this, according to Tech's university relations department:

Traffic may be restored from the Mall toward Burruss Hall by Wednesday evening. Cars would exit the Drillfield near Davidson Hall.

Traffic on the War Memorial Gym side of the Drillfield will be restricted until Friday, Aug. 11.

Questions about the schedule should be directed to the Virginia Department of Transportation, 381-7200.

The closure means no parking around the Drillfield for the week. Blacksburg Transit bus routes will not run around the Drillfield as usual. Buses will operate normal summer schedules on West Campus Drive, Washington Street and Perry Street. Instead of catching the bus at Burruss Hall, riders should use the Brodie bus stop on Kent Street, said Mike Connelly, BT transit manager. For information about bus routes and sites, call 961-1185.

The closure comes as the transportation department re-paves the road after a summerlong construction project. Sidewalks have been rebuilt and handicapped access ramps improved, paid for by a state capital appropriation to the school.

"While this will be disruptive to the campus, this is the best time for them to have to do this," said university spokesman Dave Nutter.

Freshman orientation ended July 31; students start returning Aug. 17.
