BEDFORD MAN INDICTED IN RAPE OF GIRL, 9

A Bedford man was indicted Friday on felony charges of abducting, raping and sodomizing a 9-year-old girl.

Calvin McDaniel Snead, 27, is scheduled to go to trial before a jury in Bedford County Circuit Court on Sept. 20.

According to court records, the girl told police she was bicycling with a man in June when he took her to a wooded area near the Bedford Science and Technology Center and ordered her to disrobe. She said the man told her to lie on the ground and then raped and sodomized her.

After she returned home, the girl reported the attack to her mother, who called police. An emergency room physician at Bedford County Memorial Hospital confirmed to police that she had been raped.

Snead is being held in the Bedford County jail.
