BRIEFLY PUT . . .

WHAT A relief to see that Franklin County's little crossroads without a name, henceforth to be known as Westlake Corner, is properly labeled with state Transportation Department signs. That seals it.

As place names go, we can take it or leave it. It has none of the colorfulness of Burnt Chimney. But frankly, after three years of debate over what to call the Virginia 122-616 intersection near Smith Mountain Lake, any name will do. As the bard would say had he lived to see the day: All's swell that ends.

PETER Via, in a piece elsewhere on this page, has fashioned a response to his critics that, we suspect, they cannot easily rebut. Yes, he and his brother have given unusually large contributions to local GOP candidates.

But will the Democratic incumbents refuse a steady stream of sizable gifts, sure to swell to a river as the election approaches, from parties with more obvious, direct and special interests before the assembly?

Dels. Cranwell and Woodrum are invited to lead a legislative charge to limit campaign gifts.
