RU president on Crestar board

RADFORD - Douglas Covington, president of Radford University, has been named to Crestar Bank's Radford Board of Directors. The board consists of business leaders and investors drawn from a broad spectrum of the community.

Covington, who became president of the university in June, has served on governing boards of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the National Association for Equal Opportunity, and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and others. He has also served on the Indiana State Board of Education, the Faulkner University Board of Trustees, and he was chairman of the Steering Committee on Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Previously, Covington was president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

Shephard named to statewide board

BLACKSBURG - Harvey Shephard, executive director of the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.

The association develops the professional skills of chamber executives, staff and volunteer leaders; and helps individual chambers work together. The association offers members conferences on leadership and legislative issues, scholarships for continuing education, and regional meetings for the exchange of information and staff development.

Marketing director wins design award

CHRISTIANSBURG - Geneva Cox, vice president and director of marketing at First National Bank, has won an award for the design of the bank's 1994 annual report. The award was presented by Mohawk Paper Mills after reviewing hundreds of entries.

The report features an original watercolor by Barbara Capps, a local artist, depicting the 90-year history of the bank.

Cox is a native of Floyd County and a graduate of New River Community College, as well as the University of New Hampshire and the University of Colorado. She serves on the Montgomery County Improvement Council, Christiansburg Visual Enhancement Committee and other organizations.

Tech director on advisory board

BLACKSBURG - James C. Stewart, executive director at the Center for Innovative Technology at Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center, has been named to the National Bank of Blacksburg's Montgomery County Advisory Board.

Stewart is the chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Zoning Appeals, vice president of the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, and serves with a number of other business and civic organizations.

He lives in Christiansburg with his wife and three children.

Timberwright renamed to board

CHRISTIANSBURG - Sandy Bennett, owner of Blue Ridge Timberwrights in Christiansburg, has been re-elected to the Board of Directors for the Timber Framers Guild of North America.

The guild provides information on timber frame design, joinery techniques, energy efficiency, hewing techniques, frame longevity, estimating, marketing and preservation techniques.

Hill elected to insurance group

RADFORD - William "Sonny" Hill, president of Hill Insurance Agency in Radford, has been elected first vice president of The Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Hill has owned his Radford office since 1976 and opened a Floyd office in 1994. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1966 and earned Certified Insurance Counselor designation in 1987.
