HOLDREN, SALEM BLAST DURHAM

THE FIRST BASEMAN drives in six runs to give Matt Pool his first win since June 21.

Nate Holdren decided to break out the big gun and teammate Matt Pool could not have been happier.

Holdren drove in a Salem season-high six runs and Pool won for the first time since June 21 as the Salem Avalanche roped the Durham Bulls 10-3 in Carolina League action on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 7,035.

Holdren, who has 18 RBI and six homers in his past 13 games, went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple, a three-run homer - his 13th of the year - and a bases-loaded walk. His six RBI surpassed the previous Avalanche season-high of five set by Holdren and Edgard Velasquez, both in games against Prince William earlier this year.

Pool (7-6) limited the Bulls to two runs on four hits in seven innings of work while walking three and striking out two. Pool had not gotten a decision since June 27, a loss to Durham. He went through a span of six straight no-decisions and had not won since defeating Winston-Salem on June 21.

Salem (22-19) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Steve Bernhardt led off with a walk off Durham starter John Leroy (4-9). One out later, Forry Wells notched a single, but took too wide a turn at first base and was picked off for the second out. After Brian Culp walked, Keith Grunewald singled home Bernhardt with the game's first run. Holdren followed with a two-run triple to plate Culp and Grunewald for a three-run lead.

Durham (17-24) cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Wonderful Monds' two-run homer, but the Avalanche broke open the game in the sixth off Leroy. Wells led off with a single, stole second and went to third on catcher Jamie Hicks' throwing error. Culp, who was 3-for-3, followed with a double to score Wells, and after Grunewald walked, Holdren smacked a three-run homer off reliever Jeff Bock, who had just entered the game, to give Salem a 7-2 lead.

Salem added three more runs in the seventh off reliever Jason Green. Green walked Wells, Culp, Grunewald and Holdren in succession, bringing home Wells to make the score 8-2. John Giudice's single scored Culp and Jason Smith's bases-loaded walk brought in Grunewald for Salem's 10th run.

Leroy took the loss for the Bulls, going five innings and giving up six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.
