CHIEFS QUARTERBACKS GANG UP ON REDSKINS

FORMER UVA QB Matt Blundin burns holes in Washington's secondary.

Steve Bono's perfectly timed first-quarter touchdown pass was the highlight for Joe Montana's replacement in Kansas City's 37-21 NFL preseason victory over Washington on Saturday night.

Bono completed just two of eight passes for 79 yards, all in the first quarter. He got 67 yards on a TD pass to Willie Davis, lofting the ball to Davis after the receiver got behind cornerback Darrell Green.

Backup Matt Blundin, a former Virginia standout, played two quarters, completing 14 of 17 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Kansas City led 27-9 after a 50-yard punt return by J.J. Smith with 3:55 left in the third quarter, and went up 34-9 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jon Vaughn with 12:47 to play. Perry Carter returned a fumble 47 yards to set up Vaughn's touchdown.

Heath Shuler directed the Redskins in the first half, completing 11 of 27 passes for 127 yards with a costly interception.

Gus Frerotte started the second half and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Olanda Truitt with 12:07 left in the third quarter after the Redskins recovered a fumble by Tracy Greene at the Kansas City 30. Washington trailed 17-9 after Chip Lohmiller's extra point try hit the upright.

Frerotte, who was 12-of-21 for 136 yards, also connected with Tyrone Rush on a 39-yard touchdown pass on a screen with 8:35 remaining and Trent Green threw a 12-yard touchdown to Frank Wycheck with four seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

The Chiefs led 17-3 with just under a minute left in the first half on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Blundin to Danan Hughes after Shuler was intercepted by Smith to give Kansas City the ball at the Redskins' 29.

Blundin's pass into the end zone bounced off the outstretched hands of Greene and straight to Hughes.

Kansas City dominated the last part of the second quarter with Blundin leading the Chiefs on a 12-play drive that ended on Washington's 25 when Tony Richardson fumbled. But Smith intercepted Shuler on the next play.

Erick Anderson and Muhammad Oliver teamed for an apparent touchdown for Washington after Anderson intercepted Blundin, but the play was called back. Anderson picked off the ball at the Redskins' 35 and made it to midfield with the help of numerous cutbacks. He lateraled to Oliver, who went the rest of the way.

Lin Elliot kicked field goals of 20, 21 and 45 yards for the Chiefs and Lohmiller hit a 39-yarder for the Redskins.
