4 HONORED FOR DRUG-ABUSE PREVENTION WORK|

Four students at Christiansburg High School were recently recognized with the Wheeler Award while attending the 11th annual Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project Conference at Longwood College.

Juniors Karen Cox and Amanda Vanlear, along with sophomores Garret Bonnema and Chad Danner, are members of Christiansburg Teens Need Teen peer support group who attended the conference. The group was named runner-up and received a plaque and a check for $500 from the Allstate Foundation.

The award recognizes groups for their work in drug- and alcohol-prevention activities as documented in a scrapbook. The Christiansburg group also submitted a written report on the school's and organization's goals and activities.

The group will use the money it received during the school year to promote drug- and alcohol-free activities and awareness projects.

The conference was attended by more than 500 high school students and sponsors. It was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.
