W&M professor not exempt in suit
NORFOLK - A judge ruled Monday that the College of William and Mary may hold a professor responsible for any damages against the college in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a student.
A U.S. district judge disagreed with the student's and professor's attempt to exempt the professor, Ismail Abdala, from the lawsuit.
The college filed a third-party complaint against the professor. In his ruling, Judge Richard Kellam denied motions by Abdala and the student, Karen Veselits, that the complaint be dropped.
Veselits is seeking more than $2 million in damages, alleging that officials at W&M took too long in resolving a sexual harassment complaint she filed against Abdala in 1993.
Veselits wanted to keep Abdala out of the lawsuit to keep her case short, simple and focused on her injuries, said her lawyer.

Gas poisons 35 at Va. Beach motel
VIRGINIA BEACH - Hospital officials said 35 people suffered carbon monoxide poisoning Monday when water heater malfunctioned at on oceanfront motel.
All but one of the victims was expected to be released from the hospital, said Dr. Stewart Martin, an emergency room physician at Virginia Beach General Hospital. One person was taken to the Norfolk Naval Base Hospital for special oxygen treatment as a precaution, he said.
Virginia Beach Fire Chief Mike Wade said authorities were called to the six-floor Murphy's Emerald Isle hotel just before noon. Dangerous levels of the gas were found on the motel's top three floors.
Among the victims was a 7-month-old girl, who fire officials said was semiconscious when she was taken to the hospital. Martin said the baby's condition returned to normal when rescue workers gave her oxygen, Martin said.

Guard arrested as police impersonator
NEWPORT NEWS - A security guard whose car had a radar gun mounted on its dashboard and an array of other law enforcement equipment inside has been charged with impersonating a police officer.
But the suspect, Richard W. McQuillen, contends that police are angry with him because he uses his radar gun to check their speed.
``I clocked police going well over the speed limit,'' McQuillen, 39, said after his arrest last week at his home.
McQuillen was charged with two counts of impersonating an officer after being picked out of a photo lineup by people who said McQuillen identified himself as an undercover officer.
In one case, McQuillen followed a couple in his car and, when they pulled over, told the couple he was following them for their protection, said Patty Mahaffy, a police spokeswoman.
Police said McQuillen, in addition to the radar gun, had a police scanner and flashing strobe lights in his car, plus guns, badges, handcuffs, leg irons, a baton and a bulletproof vest. The guns included a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, a .357-caliber pistol, two shotguns and a .22-caliber rifle.
