BREANNA BURRUS HELPS THE A'S ACE THE COUGARS

Breanna Burrus of the A's defined clutch in the finals of the Pulaski Dixie Girl's Ponytail tournament championship.

Burrus, who paced her team's attack by going 3-for-3 with a run batted in and one scored, doubled in the fifth inning to drive home the game winning run in the 4-3 win over the Cougars.

Lindsey Ratcliff contributed offensively, driving in two runs with a third inning triple. Jody Lawson was the game's winning pitcher.

The Cougars were led at the plate by Allison Seawell, who drove in two runs.

The Reds (10-2) were the regular season champions, while the A's (10-3) came in second. The Cougars were a surprise finalist after finishing fourth (6-7) in the regular season.

The league's most valuable players were: Burrus, Paige Linkous (Rangers), Jamie Welch (Cougars) and Jessica Walker (Reds).

Belspring Baptist, Fairlawn Church of God and Max Creek Baptist are at the top of the Dublin Church League Softball standings with records of 3-0.

Dublin Church of God is one game behind, with a record of 2-1 in the 14 team league.

RACE FOR HEALTH: Runners looking for a quality event and a worthy cause should consider the inaugural ``Family Day at the Races`` at Kings Dominion, proceeds of which go to the Leukemia Society of America.

The 5-kilometer race will be 9 a.m. Oct. 7 beginning and ending at Kings Dominion. A half-mile fun run will be held for children ages 6 through 17 at 10:15 a.m. Only 1,000 runners will be allowed to compete in the event.

The entry fee, which includes admission to the park, is $20 for preregistered runners. For the fun run the cost will be $18. Entry into the park for family members and friends of runners will be $15.95.

The Leukemia Society of America hopes to find a cure for the disease, which causes the formation of an abundance of white blood cells, by the year 2000. Leukemia kills more children than any other disease.

Anyone interested in participating should contact Carl Russo, race director, at (804) 553-0139.
