CHENEY, Alan Breck, of Allgood, Alabama, died Saturday, August 5, 1995. He was born July 27, 1920 in Allgood, Alabama. He was President of Cheney Lime and Cement Company from 1946 - 1992. The company was established in 1903 and has had only two Presidents, Franklin Carter Cheney, his father, and Alan Breck Cheney. He was also President of Cheney Railroad, established in 1989. He was an Eagle Scout, and as a young man was a member the Church of the Advent Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Cheney attended Vanderbilt University, University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame University. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and Purple Heart in WW II. As a demolition frog man he destroyed underwater obstacles and was wounded in the Normandy Invasion. He was the sole survivor of his unit. His civic honors included: Board Member of the National Lime Association, Birmingham Civic Opera, Birmingham Civic Ballet, President of the St. Andrews Society of the Middle South, and Governor of the Alabama Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and the Masons. As Alan Breck Cheney Jr. wrote "" Mr. Cheney was a lover of the Arts and travel. He greatly enriched the lives of his family with trips to operas and musicals in New York City and excursions to Europe. He never allowed a television in his home for his young children, but found time to read them stories from the works of such authors as Mark Twain. Despite the lack of television, all eight children earned college degrees, with several achieving MA's and one a Ph.D..""
His survivors include, his wife, Mrs. Alan Breck (Billie) Cheney; eight children, Dr. Anne Cheney of Blacksburg, Celia Cheney Ellis of Houston, Texas, Lydia Carter Cheney, Rebecca Cheney Knight, Alan Breck Cheney Jr., John West Battle Cheney, Edith Cheney Street, and Lois Gunter McEwen Cheney, all of Alabama. Survivors also include, thirteen grandchild ren; and three sisters, Cora Cheney Partridge of Takoma Park, Md., Christine Cheney Otis of Vashon Island, Washington, and Linna Cheney White of Yuma, Ariz. Lemley Funeral Chapel, Oneonta, Alabama directed the funeral on August 7, 1995. Memorial contributions may be made to Lester Memorial United Methodist Church, Oneonta, Alabama. FERGUSON, Garnett B., 81, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, August 7, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia R. Ferguson and was a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke. He retired after 42 years of service with the US Postal Service. Surviving are his daughters, Jean F. Grubbs and husband Ray, Barbara F. FERGUSON, Henry Clay, 80, of Roanoke, died Monday, August 7, 1995, in a local hospital. He was a member and trustee of First Baptist Church, a well known soloist, choir member, deacon and served several times as chairman of the Fellowship of Deacons. He was a Sunday School teacher of 50 years and a noted Bible Scholar. He was a member and former president of the Rescue Mission Board. Mr. Ferguson was a veteran of the Army Air Corp, serving in World War II; former art director at Stone Printing Company; a retired assistant vice president at Dominion Bankshares. He was a former president of Roanoke Advertising Club and received the Silver Medal Award for his outstanding work in advertising. He was a former president of the Better Business Bureau, former president of Downtown Roanoke Association, and played an integral part in the development of the Roanoke City Market and the Mill Mountain Star. He was named Father of the Year in 1967 for religious activities. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Migs) Aldhizer Ferguson, Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Susan Ferguson, Plantation, Fla., Stephen and Catherine Ferguson, Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Martha Ferguson, Roanoke; grandchildren, Rachael Ferguson, Mindy and Lindsay Reynolds, Kathryn Ferguson, Joshua Ferguson, Jonathan Ferguson; many devoted nieces and nephews. He was born in Barren Springs on October 14, 1925 and was the son of the late Columbus Wyatt and Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins Hubbard of Barren Springs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. MACKEY, Paul Rettig, (``Bus""), of Emory, died Tuesday morning, August 8, 1995, at Bristol Health Care Center. He was a retired school administrator and a native of Galion, Ohio. Mackey was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, who held a master's detree from Ohio State University. His career in public education spanned 20 years of teaching and coaching and 20 years in school administration. Mackey had coached in Bristol and Johnson City, TN., Norton, Va. and Galion, Ohio. After joining the Alexandria, Va. City Schools as a teacher and coach, Mackey was promoted to an administrative position as assistant superintendent of physical facilities. He remained with the Alexandria school system for 26 years. From there he moved to Loudoun County, Va. as director on construction for the county schools. Upon retirement from Loudoun County in 1975, Mackey moved to Emory. During his undergraduate days at Emory & Henry, Mackey excelled as an athlete. He was the college's first Little All America football player and also was named to All-State and All-Conference teams. Mackey served as captain of the 1934 football and baseball teams. He received the Bowyer Award for the best all around athlete of the class of 1935. Mackey earned a total of twelve varsity athletic letters, competing in football, baseball and basketball. He also served as president of Blue Key Honor Fraternity and Phi Pi Alpha social fraternity. Mackey was a charter member of the Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame and served as president of the college's Alumni Association. Community activities included the Alexandria-Washington Lodge #22, AF & AM. Mackey was active at the local level of The United Methodist Church in every community in which he resided. While in Northern Virginia, he chaired the building committee for Trinity United Methodist Church in Alexandria. He is survived by on e sister, Evelyn M. Badgley of Galion, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Scott Mackey. Funeral services for Paul (Bus) Rettig Mackey will be held 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Chapel of Emory and Henry College, with the Rev. David St.Clair officiating. Luke was a former employee of American Viscose Corp. STULTZ, Harry I., of Pheonix, Arizona, formerly of Roanoke, died Monday, August 7, 1995. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael A. Stultz, and parents, Henry I. Stultz and Blodwin S. Powers. He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Nancy Balthazor, Kenneth and Jim Stultz; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, George A. Stultz, Roanoke, Robert E. and Ann Stultz, Leesburg; and sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Joe Huddleston, Roanoke; five nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be Friday in Pheonix, Arizona.
THOMPSON, J. Murphy, 95, of Floyd, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 1995 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Annie Hale Thompson, Floyd; five sons and daughters-in-law, Newell and Verda C. Thompson, King George, Earl and Eula W. Thompson, Huntingtown, Md., Dorsey and Louise P. Thompson, Floyd, Shirley Thompson, Chesapeake Beach, Md., Gene and Hazel R. Thompson, Floyd; two daughters and one son-in-law, Louise T. and Ernest Fentress, Christiansburg, Mary T. Williams, Floyd; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Annie Belle Thompson, Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 10, 1995 at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home with Elder Hale Terry officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations bel made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad or Fire Department.
TILLER, Eric Hatfield, 81, of Friendship Manor, Roanoke, passed away Monday, August 7, 1995. He was born July 17, 1914 in Narrows, and was a member of the Goodview Baptist Church. He was retired from the American Bridge Division of US Steel. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Mildy Tiller, Roanoke; a granddaughter, Karen Tiller, Roanoke; a grandson, Shawn Tiller and his wife, Deanna, Abingdon. Funeral services will be conducted from the Goodview Baptist Church 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 9 with the Rev. Joey F. Phillips officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
WALKER, Andy Kemper, 61, of Dugspur, died Monday, August 7, 1995 in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born August 1, 1934 in Grayson County, the son of the late Connie Lester Walker and Phebea Lundy Walker. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Aleda Walker. He was retired from Hercules Powder Company after 31 years. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Randall Quesenberry, Willis, Phyllis and Allen Beamer, Fancy Gap; one son, Marcus Walker, Dugspur; two brothers, C.L. Walker, Low Gap, N.C., Geedy Walker, Independence; three sisters, Irene Isom and Shirley Stuart, both of Galax, Catherine Hash, Independence; three grandchildren, Trevor Beamer, Vanessa Quesenberry and Tamra Quesenberry; sev eral nieces and nephews; special friend, Frances Horton, Hillsville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 1995 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with the Rev. Allen Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in C.C. Webb Cemetery, with military rites by Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville. WARREN, Mary Belle Richards, of Roanoke, and formerly of Radford, passed away Sunday, August 6, 1995 at Richfield Nursing Center in Salem. She was a member of the Radford Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Warren, and also by two grandchildren, Patrick and Wendy Claflin. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Howard Claflin of Chicago, Ill., and Gail and Bill Richardson of Roanoke; two brothers, William D. (``Billy"") Richards, II and Rudolph Richards, both of Radford; three grandchildren, Stacey K. Claflin, Anne R. Richardson and Billy Richardson. Memorial services will be held Friday, August 11, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, and at the home of Gail and Bill Richardson of Roanoke on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
