Used book sale

RADFORD - Books, books and more books.

The Lamplighters is sponsoring a three-day used book sale at the Radford Public Library. Proceeds from the sale will go toward library programs. Book donations are being accepted at the library. For more information, call 731-3621.

Following are the dates and times of the used book sale.

Friday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Monday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

NRCC Friday closing

DUBLIN - The New River Community College in Dublin will be closed Friday, for campus-wide electrical work.

All offices will be closed. Students can complete registration during the week of Aug. 14.

The college's off-campus activities will not be affected by the electrical work and are scheduled as planned.

Summer programs end

CHRISTIANSBURG - Summer reading programs at various libraries in the area have scheduled closing activities. All events are free and open to children in Montgomery and Floyd counties. The events are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Christiansburg library

Children may attend a special medieval festival as part of the summer's closing activity at the library Saturday at 1 p.m.

Troy Herring and his students from the Society for Creative Anachronism will present "Armored Combat," a medieval-style play, and will perform medieval dances.

The Floyd High School Madrigal singers also will perform.

Refreshments will be served and children who participated in the summer reading program will receive certificates.

Floyd library

Children may attend the special closing activities Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children who participated in the summer reading program will receive certificates, buttons, fun sheets, a bookmark and a craft table. Young adult readers should be on hand for the radio drawing.

Blacksburg library

A special closing activities program will be at the library Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Activities for the "Amazing Library Kids! Reader Recognition Day" include face painting, fun sheets, stories and refreshments. Children who participated in the summer reading program also will receive certificates.

Ruritan HQ's anniversary

DUBLIN - The Ruritan National Home Office will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its move to Dublin on Saturday.

The program includes special ceremonies, reception, fellowship and other activities, such as introduction of the 1965 board of directors, recognition of local elected officials and administrative leaders and a history of the club and its move to Dublin.

Keynote speaker will be 1995 Ruritan National President Frank Guthrie of Chesapeake. The program also will include a flag ceremony by the Boy Scouts of America.

The first Ruritan Club was established in Holland, Va., in 1928, with the idea of bettering America through fellowship, goodwill and community service. There are more than 35,000 members of Ruritan clubs in the South, Southeast and central regions of the nation. More than 13,200 Virginia residents participate in Ruritan clubs.

Pulaski Hokie Club Pig-Out

PULASKI - Come out and pig out.

The seventh annual Pulaski County Hokie Club Pig-Out Picnic will be Aug. 18, at the Appalachian Picnic Grounds on Claytor Lake. The social starts at 6 p.m. with the picnic at 7 p.m.

Special guests include Sharon McCloskey, assistant director for athletics at Virginia Tech, and Chris Ferguson, assistant men's basketball coach. Other members from the Virginia Tech athletic department also will be on hand.

The menu includes hamburgers, barbecue, slaw, baked beans, corn, dessert and drinks. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for kids 12 and under and free for kids under 6. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Hudson Chevrolet, Virginia Feed Store and the Shop-Eez in Dublin. Tickets also can be purchased by sending money to the Pulaski County Hokie Club, P.O. Box 1657.

Foot care for diabetics

CHRISTIANSBURG - A diabetic foot care seminar is scheduled for Monday, at 7 p.m. at the Center for Women's Heath Education in the New River Valley Mall. Diabetics may develop serious foot problems. The two most common are loss of feeling in the feet and poor circulation. Dr. Jeffrey Marks, a podiatric physician, will lead the seminar. It is free, but registration is required. Call 381-6298.

GED information sessions

DUBLIN - There will be two free information session for adults who are interested in learning how to earn a high school or General Education Development (GED) diploma. The sessions are sponsored by the New River Community College and will be offered Tuesday, at the Free Memorial Library in Dublin. The first session will be 10-11 a.m. and the second session will be 6-7 p.m.

Both sessions will provide information on the educational opportunities available through Adult High School and GED programs. Information will also be available on the External Diploma Program, a new program being offered to Pulaski, Giles and Floyd county residents who are 25 or older.

Free concert in Bisset Park

RADFORD - There will be a free concert at Bisset Park Tuesday, at 7 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the Radford Parks and Recreation Department and will be at the park's gazebo.

The program will feature Simple Gifts, with Jack Webster, Marya Katz and Charles Bostian, who will sing and play hammered dulcimers and guitars. The group performs traditional American, British and Irish folk music.

The program is open to the public. In case of rain, the concert will be at shelter No. 2.
