Michael Johnson is halfway home, his goal of an unprecedented 400- and 200-meter double within reach at the World Track and Field Championships in Goteborg, Sweden.
Johnson ran away from the competition in winning the 400 meters in 43.39 seconds, the second-fastest time in history. He begins preliminaries for the 200 today. (Results in Scoreboard. B5)
The Fiesta Bowl announced an agreement with Frito-Lay that will produce the richest postseason game in college football history. The two teams that meet in the Jan.2, 1996, game will split about $17 million, with another $9 million going to the college bowl alliance. Starting this season, the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowls will rotate as sites of a possible national championship game. The Fiesta will have the top alliance game this season. The game will feature the No.1 and No.2 teams in the final regular-season poll unless they are the champions of the Big Ten or Pacific-10 conferences, which are committed to the Rose Bowl.
Roanoke's Billy King, the club pro at Blue Hills, was tied for sixth place through one round of the Middle Atlantic PGA's Section Senior Championship and Section Senior Club Pro championship qualifier. King shot a 73 and was seven strokes off the pace through one round of the events, played concurrently at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club. The final round is today.
