S.C. GOLFER OVERWHELMS ROBERTSON FIELD

ROANOKE-AREA PLAYERS are in the hunt for the prestigious boys' 15-18 title.

Kyle Thompson shot a 4-under-par 67 on Wednesday to take the lead in the boys' 15- to 18-year-old age group through second round of the Scott Robertson Memorial golf tournament at Roanoke Country Club.

Thompson's effort pulled him out of a six-way tie for second and into the top spot. The Easley, S.C., golfer carded a 1-over 72 on Tuesday in the first round.

The closest golfer after two rounds is Brian Hanczaryk of Crofton, Md., at 142. Hanczaryk shot a 70 on Wednesday. Right behind Hanczaryk were Cincinnati native Andrew Sanders at 1-over 143 and Jacob Jarrett of Northside High School at 144. Glenvar High School alumnus Nick Varney is tied for fifth with Jaysen Hansen of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Chris Wisler of Dover, Del., at 3-over 145. (Results in Scoreboard. B5)

First-round leader Matthew Anderson of South Boston shot a 77 and sits in a tie for seventh at 147.

Jarrett, 16, carded a 2-under 69 to leap up the leader board. He shot a 32 on the front nine with three birdies and no bogeys. Although he cooled off with a 37 on the back nine, he had one of his best days.

Last season as a junior at Northside, Jarrett was a medalist with a 69 at Blue Hills, and he recently won his age group at the Commonwealth Games with a 69 at Hidden Valley. He said he has played golf seriously for four years.

``I've been working a lot on my practice shots,`` Jarrett said. ``It all just kicked in.``

Jarrett and Varney look to have the best chances at becoming the first Roanoke-area golfer to win the tournament. The best finish for a local golfer was last year, when Ryan Ketron, a Campbell University golfer, placed second.

Amherst's Ryan Stinnett leads the boys' 13-14 division with a 147. RCC member Trey Clower is three shots back in third place. Michael Chandler of Dublin is fifth, at 152.

Jennifer Elsea of Columbus, Ohio, leads the girls' 13-14 group with a 156. Next is Kacy Thompson at 161.

In the girls' 15-18 division, Amie Lehman of Pittsford, N.Y., shot a 73 to move into a first-place tie with Stefanie Reynolds at 147.

In the long-drive contest held Wednesday, David Lipes of Midlothian won the boys' 15-18 division with a 288-yard shot. Other winners were: Russ Johnson of Pearisburg, boys' 13-14, 269 yards; Julie Turner of Skaneateles, N.Y., girls' 15-18, 227; and Jill Crowe of Ormond Beach, Fla., girls' 13-14, 199. Roanoke's Lee Taylor was second in the boys' 13-14 division with a drive of 248.
