BLACKSBURG POLICE SHOOT, KILL SUSPECT

Blacksburg police shot and killed a man who pulled a Daisy pellet gun on them in a drugstore Wednesday afternoon.

Police identified the dead man as Maurice Taylor, 22, of Ardmore Street in Blacksburg.

He was in the Revco store in Blacksburg Square off Main Street about 4 p.m. when three officers tried to serve two warrants on him for failure to appear in court.

Blacksburg Police Chief Bill Brown said Taylor pulled a gun on the officers. Then two of the officers drew their guns and began firing at Taylor.

Taylor was shot several times in the chest and neck and was dead on arrival at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The third officer, Michael Mickey, was wounded in the left leg, Brown said. Mickey apparently was shot accidentally by one of the other officers.

Brown said Taylor never fired his gun.

Police would not release the name of the two officers who fired at Taylor.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital said Mickey was in satisfactory condition.

A woman who witnessed the shooting and asked to remain anonymous said that between 8 and 10 shots were fired.

"I was just looking at the magazines and looked up and [the officers] ran by," she said. There were "loud, loud shots. Lots and lots of them."

She said only about five other customers were in the store.

Brown said two store employees also witnessed the incident.

Blacksburg police learned that Taylor was in the store when someone who knew he was wanted called police.
