They will get their awards Sept. 9 during a day-long program in Marion.
It will start at 10 a.m. with a motorcade to "Ripshin," the author's home near Troutdale, and a visit to his grave in Round Hill Cemetery.
The Sherwood Anderson Archive at the Smyth-Bland Regional Library building in Marion will be open for visitors at 2 p.m. The program will start there at 3 p.m. with reminisences about Anderson by Robert S. "Bob" Garnett, remarks by Smyth County writer Mack H. Sturgill, and a sharing of creative writing ideas by some of the contest winners.
Sturgill will provide commentary for a 5 p.m. walking tour of site related to Anderson's time in Marion. The awards dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Inn Ballroom, with comments by Hilbert Campbell on some of the winning stories.
Reservations for those attending the awards dinner besides the winners are $10. Payment can be made Sept. 9 but reservations should be made by calling Don Francis at 496-7716 during working hours and 783-8230 afterward.
Winners in the adult category are Carter Elliott of Christiansburg, first place; A.J. Firebaugh, Troutville, second, and Phillip Miller, Princeton, W.Va., and Sandra Tucker-Maxwell, Roanoke, tied for third;
High school: Laura Brewington, Mount Airy, N.C., first; Joey Scarberry, Galax, second; Schaap Freeman, Marion, and Cassandra Perry, Pound, tied for third;
Middle school: Tyler Yelton, Wytheville, first; Andrea Crigger, Rural Retreat, second, and Leslie Walters, Wytheville, third.
