According to a search warrant filed in Roanoke Circuit Court, city police and state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents believe the private social club is selling mixed drinks illegally and maintaining a common nuisance as defined by state law.
No charges have been filed in connection with the ongoing ABC investigation, according to Robert Chapman, a spokesman for the agency.
But since the raid, police have charged club owner Billy Fisher with possession of cocaine, a charge authorities said was related to the ABC investigation and raid.
The club, in the 700 block of Patterson Avenue Southwest, has a license to sell beer and wine - but not mixed drinks - to members and their guests.
According to the search warrant, an informant entered the club in March 1994 and paid $3 for a scotch and water. Since then, three other informants have purchased mixed drinks at the club, the warrant states.
In addition to seizing the liquor, authorities confiscated several boxes of records, including membership forms, guest lists and receipts.
As a private club, the Black Angus is not subject to the same regulations as commercial nightclubs, Chapman said. The club is not required to stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m., for example. But sales of alcohol are limited to club members and their guests.
Fisher, 45, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
