BRIEFLY PUT...

ALMOST HALF of voters polled told U.S. News & World Report they want Gen. Colin Powell to run for president, though the political views of the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are unknown. The less Americans know about politicians, apparently, the better they like them.

And why not? With no ugly, hot-button issues alienating him from any segment of the public, Powell is simply a decent, intelligent man who led the military during the successful Gulf War. No one even knows whether he is a Democrat or a Republican. He's waiting till a September book tour to announce his intentions - and, presumably, his party affiliation. After that, "I Like Ike II" buttons might be sprouting around the country.

THE SMITH Mountain Lake 4-H Educational Center in Franklin County has just added a handicapped-accessible boat dock, gazebo, educational center and miniature golf course to its facilities.

We hope that will mean more happy campers. Few handicapped children have attended the summer camp in the past, but easier access might inspire more to head to the lake for some fun. Surely that hope is what inspired the neighborly businesses that donated the materials and some of the labor to make the improvements.
