13-YEAR-OLD CYCLIST RUNS STOP SIGN, IS HIT BY CAR

A 13-year-old Roanoke boy was injured, but not seriously, Friday morning when he was hit by a car after he ran a stop sign while riding his bike.

The boy was riding south on Barnett Road Northwest with two other children when he failed to stop at the intersection with Melrose Avenue. Witnesses told police the other two cyclists did stop.

Arnold Greenwall Asbury of Roanoke was driving on Melrose when the boy rode in front of his car, Roanoke police said.

The boy was carried about 25 feet on the hood of the car before sliding off and landing in the median. He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital after he complained of back pain.

Police said no charges will be filed against Asbury or the boy, whose name they did not release.
