POLICE ASK STATE TO PROBE SHOOTING

The Blacksburg Police Department asked state police on Friday to investigate the fatal shooting of a man who was being arrested.

Blacksburg police officers shot and killed Maurice Taylor, 22, on Wednesday after he pointed what turned out to be a BB gun at the officers. The gun resembles a .45-caliber pistol.

Police were arresting Taylor for failure to appear in court. The incident occurred in the Revco drugstore in Blacksburg Square off Main Street about 4 p.m.

One officer, who was standing behind Taylor and restraining him, was wounded in the thigh by a fellow officer's bullet. About 10 shots hit Taylor in the neck and chest.

Blacksburg Police Chief William H. Brown could not be reached for comment Friday.
