AMO, Mary Elizabeth, 69, of Narrows, died Thursday, August 10, 1995, in a Pearisburg hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Rich Creek. She was a retired employee with Super Aide Pharmacy, Rich Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey B. Amo. She was born February 13, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Gordon and Linnie Gaye Reynolds Morris. She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Micklewright, Narrows; a grandson, Jason Micklewright, Fort Dix , N.J.; a granddaughter, Shana Micklewright, Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 1995, in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows, with the Rev. Jack Musick officiating. Interment will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

DAVIS, Frances Willis, 81, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 8, 1995, following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Dr. Hal Davis, M.D. and the daughter of the late Senator Holman Willis and Bess Brower Willis. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth D. Towler and two brothers, Holman Willis Jr. and Keith Willis. Frances was a 1936 graduate of Hollins College and a life long member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she was an active member of the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Roanoke Valley Garden Club. Her surviving children are, Frances Davis Tenbrook of Wilbraham, Mass., Marion Davis Rummel of Castleton, Vt., Mar y Keith Welch of Roanoke; a brother, Gordon C. Willis of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 1995, at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas O'Dell officiating. FAIN, Cullen McNeer, (``Chester''), 60, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, August 10, 1995, at his residence. He was a native of War, W.Va. He was retired from Plumbers and Pipefitter Union Local 110 after 35 years service. He was an active member and on the Pastor's Council in the Riverview Church of God, Draper. He served on the Apprenticeship Committee of Local 491 in Roanoke. He worked for many years at the Radford Army Arsenal as a Superintendent for Hicks and Ingle. He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Fain; mother, Lillian Vann Terry, Pulaski. Also surviving are three da ughters, Gwendolyn Fain Wiley and husband, Ken, Norfolk, Karen Fain Caddy and husband, Tim, Chesapeake, Betty (``Terry"") Fain Ward, Portsmouth; one son, Monty Fain and wife, Missy, Chesapeake; one sister, Dovie Ann Frigo, Reading, Calif.; two brothers, Frank J. Fain, Suffolk, Bob R. Fain, Portsmouth; seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 13, 2 p.m. at Portsmouth Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Wendell Gaffney and the Rev. GROSS, Jane Wood, 64, of 204 Clearwater Drive, Covington, died Thursday night, August 10, 1995, at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Gross was born March 31, 1931 in Roanoke County, a daughter of the late Stephen T. Wood and Roberta McDonald Wood. Jane was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother, and office manager of Virginia Real Estate, the family business. She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gross is survived by her husband of 42 years, Don F. Gross; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas F. and Kelly S. Gross; special granddaughter, Shannon L. MAHER, Francis Joseph,
of Blacksburg, Emeritus Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, died August 10, 1995. Born in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1915, Professor Maher was graduated from Manhattan College and received his Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. He joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 1937 and taught there until his retirement in 1978--41 years. Professor Maher was a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of both the Virginia and National Society of Professional Engineers. He was a life member of the American Society of Engineering Education and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Honor societies include Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, and the Research Society of Sigma Xi. He was the recipient of several major teaching awards, the Wine Award, and the Western Electric Fund Award of the American Society for Engineering Education. In 1978 he was named to ""Outstanding Educators in America."" At his retirement, the Frank J. Maher Award for Teaching Excellence was established in his honor, and a scholarship was created for a deserving student in the Department of Engineering Science. In April 1995, the Frank Maher Professorship in Engineering Science and Mechanics was established. Professor Maher is survived by his wife, Jean Howard Maher; a son, Dr. Thomas H. Maher, Blacksburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Jean and Travis J. Tysinger of Woodberry Forest, Va.; two brothers, Joseph C. Maher, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Leo T. Maher, Lake San Marcos, Calif.; and a sister, Catherine Edwards of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Maureen Maher, David Maher, and William Maher, Pittsburg, Pa., Andrew Tysinger, Charlotte, N.C., and Michael Tysinger, Fayetteville, N.C. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cornelius Maher and Jeremiah Maher. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 1995, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Donald LeMay officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. VARNER, Flora Lee, 83, of Radford, died Thursday, August 10, 1995 at 1 p.m. at her home. She had been in failing health for the past three months. Flora was born April 8, 1912 in Randolph County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Thomas Franklin Valentine and Nevada Skidmore Valentine. She was a long time resident of Elkins, W.Va., Jamesburg, N.J., and a resident of Radford for the pas t eleven years. She was an active member of forty years in the Church of the Nazarene in Elkins, W.Va., Edison, N.J., and Pulaski. Her husband of 62 years, Russell M. Varner, Sr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Varner is survived by one son, Russell Martin Varner, Jr., Radford; four daughters, Mrs. Donald D. Smith (Vivian Lee), Dublin, Maxine Mae Varner, Radford, Mrs., Joyce Ann Pudder, Howell, N.J., and Mrs. Peter P. Tomaro (Coral Jean), Old Bridge, N.J. Also surviving are one brother, Thomas Franklin Valentine, Elkins, W.Va.; sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. One son, one daughter, and eight grandchildren preceded her in death.
