NAMES & CHANGES

Executives advance at Fred Whitaker

LEWIS A. OECHSLIN has been named executive vice president of the Roanoke-based Fred Whitaker Co. In addition to his new responsibilities, Oechslin will continue to direct corporate research and development, marketing and sales.

WILLIAM M. YATES, who is director of engineering, will be made vice president of operations and engineering, a new corporate position. Both men will work in Roanoke.

Fred Whitaker is a manufacturer of nylon yarn and provides yarn dying service to commercial carpet manufacturers.

ACCOUNTING

The Institute of Management Accountants has elected new officers: PAUL J. DAVIDSON JR., Cybermotion Inc., president; KERRI THORNTON, Carilion Services Inc., vice president administration and finance; JANE SCHIPPER, teacher, vice president communication; DAVID ANDERSON, Roanoke Gas Co., vice president professional education; SUSAN CULBERTSON, Controllers Etc., vice president membership, corporate and academic development; PATRICIA G. CROW, Magnetic Bearings Inc., secretary; and RICHARD L. HALL, treasurer.

ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS

H. BOYD DICKENSON, president of Dickenson Management Services, has been elected a Fellow of The American Consulting Engineers Council. Dickenson spent most of his career with Roanoke-based Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc., from which he retired in 1992 as chairman and chief executive officer.

BANKING

BROADDUS M. SHIVELY and MIKE HARMAN have been elected to the board of directors of First Virginia Bank-Franklin County. Shively, retired president of Central Oil Corp. of Virginia, has been mayor of Rocky Mount since 1990; and Harman, president of MW Manufacturers in Rocky Mount, has been with the window and door company since 1971.

COLLEGES

HOLLY HALE WEAVER of Roanoke, human resource manager for Lutheran Family Services of Virginia, has been named a member of Bluefield College's board of advisors.

COMMUNICATIONS

JOHNNY BENSON has been promoted to director of operations for Cox Communications in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Benson joined Cox Cable Roanoke Inc. in 1976, where he has been installation manager, service manager and most recently plant operations manager. He is a member of the Virginia Cable Television Association.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

JENNY McBRIDE has joined Downtown Roanoke Inc. in the newly created position of program manager. She most recently worked for the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce as marketing and program coordinator and is past president of Ad2 of the Roanoke Valley. In her new position, she will be responsible for a variety of programs, including special events, promotions and marketing activities.

HEALTH CARE

DR. MASTON R. McCORKLE JR. of Roanoke has been named president-elect of the Virginia Association of Orthodontists.

CATHERINE HARMAN has been named district sales manager for the Roanoke office of Southern Health Services Inc., a Richmond-based managed health care company which has recently expanded its operations into Southwestern Virginia.

INSURANCE

FRANK FOLEY, Mutual of New York field underwriter, has been named Life Underwriter of the Year by the Roanoke Valley Life Underwriters Association. A 36-year veteran of Mutual of New York, Foley's company awards include President's Council, Top Club and Field Club. Within the life insurance industry, he has earned the Million Dollar Round Table and National Sales Achievement awards.

INTERIOR DESIGN

SHEILA E. WILSON of Healthcare Interiors Inc. in Roanoke has been elected president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

MANUFACTURERS

PRESTON "BUTCH" SIMMONS has been named president and chief executive officer of Virginia House Furniture Corp. in Atkins effective Sept. 1. He will replace GEORGE "PUNCH" GREER, who will remain a director of the company.

NONPROFITS

Blue Ridge Independent Living Center Inc. recently elected new officers: ROGER "TERRY" WINBORNE III, The Atlantic Mutual Cos., chairman; ED McGRATH, Blue Ridge Community Services, vice chairman; FAYE DUNDORE, community volunteer, secretary; and KAREN WILLIS, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, treasurer. CHARLES A. HARLOW, Roanoke grants monitor, was appointed to the board of directors.

The center is a private, nonprofit, nonresidential program that assists people with disabilities in the Fifth Planning District.

ROBERT N. COLLIS II, a certified public accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick and Co., has been elected president of the Julian Stanley Wise Foundation board of directors. Other officers include KENNETH C. KING, King & Higgs law firm, vice president; JAMES T. "MAC" McGUIRE, U.S. Army Reserve, vice president; and JOHN T. JESSEE, Woods Rogers & Hazlegrove, secretary.

RICHARD A. BARNES of Rockbridge County has been re-elected a national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Barnes, executive director of Kappa Alpha Order in Lexington, was named to a new one-year term as a voluntary leader of the national health organization.

ORGANIZATIONS

PAT W. HOLCOMB of The Picus Group in Roanoke has been named public relations officer of the Virginia State Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services.

UTILITIES

BOBBY WELLS has been named director of customer services and information systems at Roanoke Gas Co. Wells has been with Roanoke Gas for 12 years, most recently as director of information services.

WHOLESALE

SARAH KAY GREENHOLTZ has joined the sales department of Webb's Oil Corp. in Roanoke. She will be managing the fuel oil division of the petroleum marketing company.
