Carolyn Ballard of West Point, N.Y., was on the escalator with her mother Thursday when she fell forward and caught her leg in the narrow gap between its steps and the side wall, police said.
Her left calf was cut to the bone, according to witnesses and her mother, Pamela Ballard. She was taken to Fairfax Hospital.
Witnesses said Pamela Ballard held Carolyn's left leg and applied pressure using the girl's shirt and a disposable diaper from a passer-by as compresses until medical help arrived.
Pamela Ballard could not be reached to say whether she was holding Carolyn's hand, as transit officials advise riders accompanying small children to do.
