Dr. E. Claiborne Irby Jr. said he removed a torn ligament and some cartilage from the governor's right knee during the 11/2-hour operation.
``He will be back on his feet very soon,'' Irby said.
He advised Allen, a former University of Virginia quarterback, to give up playing football for at least a couple of months.
Allen returned to work a short time after surgery.
The governor injured his knee July 27 during a touch football game with interns and governor's fellows after at cookout at the mansion.
