READY TO RECYCLE? HERE'S HOW TO DO IT

Several Roanoke Valley localities and community groups are responding to the increasing concern about the environment and limited landfill space by sponsoring recycling programs.

Several localities have curbside pickup of recyclable materials. Pickup is available in the following localities:

Roanoke: Provides curbside pickup of recyclable materials to 16,000 residents. Program will be expanded to include 23,000 households by the end of this year.

Serving 24 city neighborhoods in all quadrants, curbside collection is every other week on regular trash collection day.

Accepts newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, plastic drink bottles and glass food and beverage containers.

Eighteen-gallon bins are provided for duplexes and apartments, and 32-gallon roll-out carts to single-family homes.

Roanoke County: Provides curbside pickup of materials for recycling to 3,800 homes.

Unseparated-materials pickup is provided for the neighborhoods of North Lakes, Willow Creek, Montgomery, Crofton and Lindenwood.

Source-separated materials is provided for the neighborhoods of Castle Rock and Fort Lewis.

New drop-offs at Roanoke Valley Resource Authority, 1020 Hollins Road.

Vinton: Has a mandatory curbside recycling program for all homes. Accepts aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles and all paper products including magazines. Call Anita McMillan, town planner, 983-0601.

Bedford: Has a mandatory curbside recycling program for all single-family residences. Accepts newspapers, glass, aluminum and bi-metal cans, and plastic milk jugs and soft drink bottles.

Botetourt County: Some curbside pickup available through licensed private haulers. Call Kurt Hodgen, public works director, 473-8316.

For residents of areas where curbside recycling is not yet available, various drop-off points are open to receive newspapers, mixed paper, glass, aluminum, mixed metal, plastic and other recyclable items.

Following is a list of several of these locations, with hours of operation and the items they accept:

Roanoke Valley

Advance Auto: Seven Roanoke Valley locations. Open seven days a week. Accepts used automotive batteries and motor oil.

Browning Ferris Industries: 341 24th St. N.W. Open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Accepts aluminum cans, newspaper, mixed paper, cardboard and glass.

Community Recycling Station: 2580 Broadway St. S.W. (off Interstate 581 at Wonju Street). Open daily, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Accepts glass (beverage or food only), aluminum, scrap metal, newspaper, mixed paper and plastic containers (PETE and clear HDPE).

Kroger: Lake Drive Plaza, Cave Spring Corners, Crossroads Mall. Open 24 hours. Accepts glass, cans, newspaper and plastic containers (PETE and HDPE). Kroger plastic bags may be recycled in bins inside all Kroger stores.

Roanoke Valley Resource Authority: Tinker Creek Transfer Station, 1020 Hollins Road (near Orange Avenue and Hollins Road). Open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Drop-off containers for glass, newspapers and aluminum cans. Mulch loaded free Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information, call Carolyn Wagner, 857-5050.

Salem Transfer Station: 1300 Indiana St. Accepts cardboard, aluminum, glass (separated by color), newspaper, scrap metal, bi-metal cans and plastics (PETE and HDPE).

Bedford

Bedford Recycling Center: City Landfill. Open daily. Accepts newspapers, mixed paper, glass (separated by color), beverage cans (aluminum and bi-metal) and plastic milk jugs and soft drink bottles.

Bedford County

All of the following Bedford County 24-hour drop-off centers accept dry, tied newspaper and inserts, rinsed steel or aluminum cans, rinsed brown, green or clear glass, and plastic (soft drink or milk bottles only).

Big Island: Big Island Fire Department, U.S. 501.

Centerville: Virginia 122 and 644.

Chamblissburg: Virginia 755, off Virginia 24.

Forest: Off Virginia 221 at Graves Mill Center and dump site on Virginia 221.

Moneta: Moneta Fire Station, Virginia 122.

Montvale: U.S. 460, next to Butterfield's.

Smith Mountain Lake: State Park dump site on Virginia 626.

Bedford also operates a mobile recycling unit at various locations.

Botetourt County

Blue Ridge Stone: U.S. 460. A container from Cycle Systems is available 24 hours a day, accepting newspapers, aluminum and bi-metal cans.

County Landfill: Virginia 779. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. Accepts mixed paper, aluminum, glass, tires and appliances (PETE and HDPE).

Schools: Breckinridge, Buchanan, Cloverdale, Colonial, Eagle Rock and Troutville elementary schools; James River and Lord Botetourt high schools. Accept mixed paper, aluminum, glass and plastics (PETE and HDPE) 24 hours a day.

Kav Kan Corp.: U.S. 11, Cloverdale. Accepts glass, mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, tin and scrap metal. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon.

Craig County

A drop-off center for newspaper, glass, scrap metal, aluminum and tin cans is at the county landfill. Open Monday-Thursday and Sunday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Franklin County

Franklin County has six 24-hour drop-off points for household recyclable items within the county. For information, call John Crook, landfill supervisor, at 489-1600.

Recyclables accepted at these sites include newspapers, unified beverage cans, glass food and beverage containers (separated by color) and all types of plastics. Additionally, the county landfill site located on U.S. 220 can accept such items as cardboard, motor oil, large appliances and tires.

The locations are: Scruggs, Virginia 616; Blackwater River, U.S. 220; county landfill, U.S. 220; Burnt Chimney, Virginia 670; Glade Hill, Virginia 718; and Ferrum, Virginia 40.

Landfill hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday and holidays, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Purchase of recyclables

Blue Ridge Beverage: 4446 Barley Drive, Salem. Open Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-noon. Buys aluminum cans. 380-2000.

Cycle Systems: 2580 Broadway St. S.W. Open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Drop-off hours daily, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Buys aluminum, scrap metal, newspaper and cardboard. 981-1211.

Hedge Metal Co.: 610 Ninth St., Salem. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. Buys aluminum and scrap metal. 389-0766.

Reynolds Aluminum: Three locations are available to buy aluminum, copper and brass. They are: 102 Boulevard S.W., open Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Family Dollar Store, 2201 Dale Ave. S.E., open Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; AH Auto Sales, 1961 W. Main St., Salem, open Wednesday and Friday, 2-5 p.m.
