MUSEUMS SURE TO APPEAL TO VARIETY OF INTERESTS

Here is a list of some of the museums in and around the Roanoke Valley:

Science Museum of Western Virginia: The Arcade, gallery of light, color and sound, Chesapeake Bay touch tank with live marine animals, Learning Theatre, energy area, health exhibit, weather station, Hopkins Planetarium and traveling exhibits are open. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m.; second Friday of month, Free Fridays, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; free admission to exhibit floor only, 3:30-8 p.m. Museum admission: $5 adults, $4 senior citizens, $3 ages 3-12; add $1.30 for planetarium admission. Art Museum of Western Virginia: Exhibit of 19th- and 20th-century paintings, sculpture, graphic art and Appalachian folk art. Museum hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; third Friday of the month, 6-9 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Admission free. Suggested donation: $2 adults.

Harrison Museum of African-American Culture: Museum researches, preserves and interprets the achievements of African-Americans relative to Southwestern Virginia. Permanent and traveling exhibits. Special events. Free admission. Museum hours: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (first Friday of month until 9 p.m.); Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Located at 523 Harrison Ave. N.W., Roanoke, 24016. 345-4818.

Explore Park: Blue Ridge Settlement, re-creation of a frontier town, blacksmith/wheelwright's shop, self-guided trails, special events. Museum hours: Saturday-Monday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: $4 adults; $2.50 ages 6-18; under 6 free when accompanied by adult. Open April through October. Roanoke Valley History Museum: Museum and library collect and preserve Roanoke-area history. ``Crossroads in History,''``Historic Fashion Parade,''``D-Day Remembered,'' ongoing exhibits. Museum hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Admission: $2 adults; $1 children 6-12; students, senior citizens, under 5 free. Located on third floor, Center in the Square. 342-5770.

Virginia Museum of Transportation: Largest collection of railroad artifacts in the southeastern United States. Special exhibits and events. Museum hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Admission: $4 adults; $3 senior citizens ($2.40 on Wednesdays); $2 ages 13-18; $1.75 ages 3-12. Salem Museum and Salem Historical Society: Exhibits on the history of Salem and the Roanoke Valley, as well as ``Salem and the War Between the States,'' ``A Most Attractive Place: The Lake Spring Resort Hotel,'' ``A Brown House Parlor,'' ``First Lessons: Salem's Educational Heritage,'' ``A.H. Plecker, 19th Century Photographer.'' Museum hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Operated by the Salem Historical Society. Museum of Catholic Historical Society of Roanoke Valley: Guided tours and display of artifacts, photographs and information on the history of the Catholic Church in the Roanoke Valley. Museum hours: Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Located in Parish Center of St. Andrew's Church, 624 N. Jefferson St., Roanoke. 774-5304.

Vinton Historical Society Museum: Exhibits honoring local citizens who served in World War II and historical displays depicting past events and places in Vinton and surrounding areas. Museum hours: Thursdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Located at 210 Jackson Ave. and Maple Street, Vinton. 890-0007, 342-4476.

Historic Avenel: Stately mansion built for William N. and Frances Steptoe Burwell circa 1838. Tours available on the third Sunday of each month 2-5 p.m. Admission: $3 adults, $1.50 students. Located at 413 Avenel Ave., Bedford. 586-0394.

Avoca Museum and Historical Society: Museum hours: Thursday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. 1514 Main St., Altavista. Admission charged. (804) 369-1076.

Botetourt County Museum: Furniture, glassware, clothing from county residents, depicting history from the late 1700s. Museum hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sunday, 2-4 p.m. Located behind the courthouse in Fincastle. 992-8394.

Floyd County Historical Society and Old Church Gallery: History Museum at Gallery House. Art exhibits. Museum hours: Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Located at 110 Wilson St., Floyd. 763-2338.

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest: Jefferson's year-round retreat. House tours available, Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Free admission. Tour fees: $5; $4 senior citizens; $3 college students; $1 ages 12-18. Located off U.S. 221 and Virginia 811 on Virginia 661 southwest of Lynchburg. Open April through November. (804) 525-1806.

Bedford City/County Museum: Early Bedford County, Indians of the area, early medicine and Civil War exhibit. Museum hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: $1; 50 cents children. Located at 201 East Main St. 586-4520.

Blue Ridge Institute and Farm Museum: German-American living history farm. Free institute exhibits daily year round. Farm museum open on Ferrum College campus June through August, Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, 1-4 p.m. and weekdays April through October by appointment. Admission: $3 adults; $2 children and senior citizens. The office building with two exhibits is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and June through August on Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Located at Ferrum College, Ferrum. 365-4416.

Booker T. Washington National Monument: Birthplace of Booker T. Washington. Includes visitors center and park grounds. Museum hours: daily, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days. Located on Virginia 122 in Franklin County, adjacent to Smith Mountain Lake, 12130 Booker T.
