Domestic coal production totaled 18.6 million tons during the week ending Aug. 5, down 6 percent from the 19.9 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 19.8 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Domestic coal production so far this year is about 596 million tons, 1 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.
