POLICE CHARGE BOATER IN BIRTHDAY SUIT

After stopping a pontoon boat for a light violation on Smith Mountain Lake about 11 p.m. Saturday, a Game and Inland Fisheries officer shined his light on the driver, who was ... well, without clothes.

Sgt. Ron Henry charged the Roanoke man with drunken driving and refusal to take a blood or breath test.

``It was the first time I gave a field sobriety test to a nude man,'' Henry said. ``I told him I would appreciate it if he would put some pants on before I took him to jail.''

Henry said the man said he was ``a registered nudist.'' The man's wife was also on the boat and also naked. Two other people were riding along partially dressed, Henry said.

The man wore shorts to Franklin County Jail.
