IN SCHOOL

KIANNA PRICE, daughter of Charles and Anita Price of Roanoke, was elected governor of Virginia Girls' State, the annual citizenship seminar sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Price, a rising senior at Patrick Henry High School, was junior class president and is incoming vice president of the Student Government Association. She also is captain of the cheerleading team and president of America's Pride, a performing arts team that talks to elementary and middle school students about substance abuse. She also volunteers with the TRUST Teenline, a hot line for troubled teens, and Festival in the Park.

ANN BLAIR HANES and ADAM CHILDERS, students at James Madison Middle School in the spring, received the Good Citizenship Medals by the Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Hanes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leigh T. Hanes and is president of the Beta Club and works with Special Olympics and Peer Mediator Program. She also started an eigth-grade Bible study group at Madison.

Childers is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Childers and a member of the Madison soccer, wrestling and tennis teams.

THOMAS M. BARNHILL and ANDREW M. OSBORN have been named to the dean's list at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

Barnhill is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Barnhill of Salem, and Osborn is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale M. Osborn of Roanoke.

GINA NASCA, daughter of Carl and Mary Nasca of Roanoke, was named female Presidential Scholar for the state of Virginia. A male and female are chosen from each state each year. The award is based on SAT and ACT scores, student essays, leadership qualities, strong character, school recommendations and involvement in community and school activities.

She is a 1995 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

KIRSTEN STEWART, daughter of Connie L. Crites of Roanoke, has been named to the honor roll at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.

C. ZEKE BARLOW, son of Chris and Christie Barlow of Roanoke, recently graduated from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa., with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies.

SARAH C. METCALFE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack L. Metcalfe of Roanoke, recently received an associate of arts degree from Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

ASHLEY MICHELLE MOORE of Fincastle was named to the dean's list at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.

TINA WHITESELL of Salem and CHRIS AYERS of Roanoke have been selected by Dominion Business School to represent Virginia at the Phi Beta Lambda National Business Competition in Orlando, Fla.

Whitesell placed second in state competition for impromptu speaking and will compete in the business management category on the national level. Ayers placed third in public speaking on the state level and will compete in the business law category at the national competition.

BRECKINRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL has announced the names of teachers and art students who received first place in the Student Video Arts Advocacy Contest. The contest is sponsored by the Virginia Art Education Association. Beverly Garraghty and Rebecca Hepler are the teacher winners, and Reka Lavinder, Erin Marley, Josh Lowry, and Daniel Bliley are student winners.

Garraghty received $300 to promote art education and has been invited to the 1995 Fall Virginia Art Education Association Conference.

THE WOODROW WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND earned one of only two superior ratings in the 19th annual Carowinds Band Festival in Fort Mill, S.C. Bill Carr is the director.

THERESA MARIE ROBERTSON, a recent graduate of William Fleming High School, has received a $1,500 Byrd Scholarship to attend Harvard University in the fall.

SEVERAL WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOL BAND MEMBERS received awards during its final band concert of the 1994-1995 school year.

Winners of the Top Bandsmen award were: DeVon Preston, Fenn Crutchfield, Kim Mays, Erica Lea, Teryck Coles, Amy Johnson, Chris Underwood, Keisha Miller, Omar Kasey, Kory Blackwell, John E. Wright. The award is based on student vote.

Winners of the John Phillip Sousa Award were: Malia Yopp, Teryck Coles, Amy Johnson, John E. Wright. It is presented to the top senior or seniors of the overall band program for the year.

Travis Ringstaff won the Louis Armstrong Award. It is presented to the top senior member of the jazz program for the year.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY has named several Roanoke-area students to its spring semester dean's list.
