Jones, a partner in Penn, Stuart, Eskridge & Jones, would fill the vacancy created by Judge J. Harry Michael of Charlottesville, who will assume senior status at the end of October. If confirmed, Jones would sit in Abingdon.
As the state's only Democratic senator, it was Robb's role to recommend to the White House someone to fill the vacancy. Robb sent Jones' name Tuesday to President Clinton, who will make a recommendation to the Senate, which must confirm judicial candidates.
"Jim Jones has a long and distinguished record of service to Virginia, and is highly respected by the entire legal community," Robb said in a news release. "I'm pleased to recommend him for this judgeship."
Jones could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
