Pulaski Town Council has opted not to join in a fee increase effective in other parts of the county.
Council voted 7-1 Tuesday night not to go along with the Pulaski County Recreation Commission in increasing youth sports participation fees from $10 to $15 per person. The commission set a limit of $45 for members of the same family.
The recommendation came as a motion from council's Ordinance Committee, but Roy D'Ardenne made a substitute motion that no changes be made until the results of a town recreation study were available. W.H. "Rocky" Schrader seconded the motion, saying recreation participants had not gotten enough notice on the change.
Eddie Hale voted against the delay, noting that the county and Dublin have already made the change. "If we're going to have countywide recreation, we have to go with what the county [recreation] board says, I think."
The Ordinance Committee recommended that no change be made in the town charter to reduce the number of seats on council or to give the mayor a vote in situations other than tie votes. There was no further discussion on the matter.
In other business, council appointed Don Bowman to the county recreation commission. Bowman is assistant athletic director at Radford University.
Council learned that Finance Director Max Beyer has held two meetings with businesses selling tobacco products to explain procedures for complying with increased town taxes on cigarettes and cigars, starting Sept. 1. Neither meeting was well attended, and Beyer has sent written explanations of the procedures to all tobacco products dealers or retailers in town.
