HOLLINS LEFT SCRAMBLING

For the second time in three years, Hollins College is hurriedly trying to find a full-time basketball and soccer coach.

Kellie Kennedy, Hollins' coach in those sports the past two seasons, has joined the women's basketball coaching staff at the University of Richmond as an assistant. Kennedy told the Hollins administration of her decision on the night of Aug.10.

Kennedy was hired Sept.3, 1993, after Laura Williges left early in August 1993. Williges departed to take an assistant basketball coach's position at Slippery Rock University. Kennedy's departure again has left Hollins in a difficult position as the start of the school year approaches.

``It's not the best thing,'' said Lynda Calkins, Hollins' athletic director.

When Williges resigned, Hollins received more than 60 applications for the vacancy. The position - coaching the basketball and soccer teams and teaching in the school's physical education department - was filled in less than a month.

This time, Calkins' department also is in the process of searching for a full-time field hockey and lacrosse coach.

Kennedy came to Hollins after serving as an assistant at North Carolina-Wilmington. A 1990 graduate of North Carolina and a four-year letter-winner for the Tar Heels' basketball team, Kennedy is believed to be the first Hollins coach to actively recruit off campus. Her basketball teams went 7-41 in Kennedy's at the helm.
