PLAYERS SWEAT OUT RVGA QUALIFYING

Brian Agee was anxious. So were David Hagadorn, Ralph Weddle, Reed Daw and Bart Edmunds, but for a different reason.

Agee shot a 1-under-par 71 on Thursday at Hanging Rock to earn the qualifying medal for the Roanoke Valley Golf Association men's championship. Agee finished with a 36-hole total of 7-under 136.

Weddle and Daw, on the other hand, had to beat Edmunds and Hagadorn in a playoff to advance to today's start of match play. All four tied at 154 in qualifying. (Results in Scoreboard. B8)

Agee and Daw will face each other in the first round of match play.

``It makes me feel good,'' said Agee, who is making his first appearance in the tournament and is the youngest participant, along with fellow 18-year-old Brian Hill. ``There's a lot of good guys in this competition.''

Weddle draws Adam Harrell, who received an automatic berth in match play as 1994 champion.

``I am looking forward to it, but he's a little bit out of my class,'' Weddle said of Harrell, who will be a senior in the fall at George Mason University. ``But I don't mind playing nice guys, and he's one.''

In match play, four golfers are grouped together, then paired into twos where the players compete against one another.

Rodney Naff, the 1993 champion, was one stroke behind Agee after the first round Wednesday, but soared to an 81 to finish at 147. He is seeded 15th for match play.

Cam Young, John Hubbard and Hill, who were tied two strokes behind Agee after the first round, earned the third, fourth and fifth seeds, respectively.

Young finished at 139, Hubbard 143 and Hill 144.

In the senior division, first-round leader Bill Proffitt shot a 73 to finish at 144 and earn the top seed in match play.

Proffitt will face Jim Pearce, who earned the final spot by defeating John Edwards in a playoff. Pearce and Edwards were at 160 after regulation play.

The players who did not qualify for match play will compete in flight competition today.
