SALEM OFFENSE MISFIRES AGAIN

BRENT CROWTHER FALLS victim to offensive ineptitude as the Avalanche suffers its sixth straight loss.

While most of the East Coast awaits the arrival of Hurricane Felix, the Salem Avalanche pitching staff is anxiously awaiting the arrival of its offense.

The Lynchburg Hillcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the second consecutive night to knock off Salem 1-0 in Carolina League action on Thursday night, sweeping the three-game series while sending the Avalanche to its six straight loss.

The Avalanche scored only four runs in the series despite getting great pitching which allowed only six runs in three games.

Salem (25-28) wasted a brilliant performance by Brent Crowther, who pitched 81/3 scoreless innings and gave up six hits while walking two and striking out five in his longest outing as an Avalanche. His counterpart, Jimmy Anderson, pitched well also, going seven innings and giving up no runs on five hits while walking one and striking out seven. Neither pitcher figured in the decision.

Lynchburg (27-27) started its rally in with one out in the ninth. After Crowther retired Jay Knoblauh, manager Bill Hayes took him out and brought in left-hander Joe Waldron (0-2) to face three consecutive left-handed batters.

Chance Sanford greeted Waldron with a single and Ken Bonifay followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Tommy Robertson then singled to right to bring in Sanford with the game's only run.

The Avalanche had great chances to score, but could not come up with a big hit. Salem saw scoring chances end in the third, fourth and sixth on double plays. In the seventh, Colin Dixon led off with a double, but Anderson got Brian Culp to strikeout, Nate Holdren to line out and Keith Grunewald to strikeout, leaving Dixon stranded at second.

Brian Farson (6-2) picked up the win in relief, going two innings and giving up just one hit while walking one and striking out two.

Salem returns home for a seven-game homestand tonight with three games against Winston-Salem and four against Wilmington.
