Morning jazz on WVRU

RADFORD - Starting Sept. 1, Radford University's WVRU (89.9 FM) offers three straight hours of jazz every weekday morning. The change is part of the station's new format and program schedule announced this week.

Jazz begins weekdays at 11 a.m. on "Jazz Cafe."

There's plenty of jazz weekends, too. Saturdays, the station broadcasts "Crescent City Sounds," a mix of rhythm and blues, zydeco and New Orleans jazz, 9-10 a.m., and "Worldwide Jazz," 10-11 a.m. Sundays, WVRU offers more laid-back jazz on "Mellow Zone," 9 a.m.-noon.

WVRU also plans to air news and public affairs weekdays, 2-3 p.m., followed by classical music until 6 p.m..

The station also has modified its slogan to "Something New for Everyone."

Radio and TV producer Jim Newberne said jazz offerings will include everyone from Duke Ellington to Chick Corea and "a lot of new artists."

"There will be a blending of all jazz styles," he said.

The station plans to continue airing new music on "Vanguard Radio," Sundays, 6-8 p.m. and Mondays through Thursdays, 8-10 p.m.

Various specialty programs also dot the program week.

WVRU was among 69 stations across the country chosen as a Triple A station by the College Music Journal for serving a wide range of musical tastes.
