Chamber of Commerce to hold business mixers

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce has scheduled three "Business After Hours" mixers in the coming months.

On Thursday, the event will take place at the Day's Inn in Christiansburg. It will be sponsored by Day's Inn, H&W Computer Systems, Montgomery Regional Hospital and WBNK-Kool 100 Radio.

The Farmhouse Restaurant will play host to a mixer Sept. 21 at the restaurant.

Blacksburg's Holiday Inn and Lewis Gale Counseling Center of the New River Valley will hold a mixer Oct. 21 at the Holiday Inn.

All chamber members are invited. Each mixer will run from 5 to 7 p.m.

New Red Cross offer makes giving blood easier

BLACKSBURG - Small and medium-sized companies now have a way to conveniently donate blood to the American Red Cross.

Under the Red Cross' Virginia Advanced Mini-Mobile Program, a nurse will visit firms and draw blood from employees at their job sites. The goal for each participating company is eight to 10 units, meaning the progam is appropriate for firms with 100 employees or fewer. Firms with a larger number of employees can schedule a visit by a bloodmobile.

In the VAMP program, a nurse can be on-site for as many as three days, drawing blood from an employee every 45 minutes. The nurse will provide all supplies and equipment, requiring only an office or room for the procedure.

Sandra Myers, a donor resources consultant with the Red Cross, said September is open for appointments. Call 961-2207.

Office to help with Wythe County home health

FORT CHISWELL - All Care Home Health Services, a department of Pulaski Community Hospital since 1988, has opened a branch office in Wythe County at the Fort Chiswell Plaza, on U.S. 52 off Interstate 81-77.

"We are very excited about expanding our service area to meet the growing health care needs of the people in Bland, Carroll and Wythe counties," said Chris Dux, the hospital's chief executive officer.

All Care already serves about 500 patients a year with skilled nursing, home care aides, medical social services and physical, speech and language therapy. Home health care is one of the fastest-growing parts of the health care industry as a cost-effective alternative for patient treatment.

"Home health care is a logical outgrowth of this nation's move back to basics," said registered nurse Donna Armes, agency director. "People requiring health care prefer to receive it at home whenever possible. They get better faster."

She said statistics show, for the elderly who need assistance with daily living or medical treatment, the institutional care cost can be cut in half.

"Insurers, including Medicare, are favoring home health care as a viable alternative to lengthy hospital stays," said registered nurse Joyce Anders, branch supervisor. "Physicians are supporting scientific evidence that people often respond better to treatment at home, rather than in the high-tech environment of the hospital."

Further information on options available through All Care can be obtained by calling 994-8590 or 637-6619. The Fort Chiswell branch will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
