The former Pulaski County High School specialist drilled a 45-yard field goal as time ran out to give the Rush its first National Minor League Football victory , a 9-8 decision over the D.C. Stonewalls on Saturday night.
The Rush (1-1) took possession with 13 seconds left on the Stonewalls' 45-yard line. A 10-yard pass completion set up Powell's heroics as he nailed his first field goal as a member of the Rush and the first in the expansion team's history.
The Stonewalls (2-1) took an 8-0 lead on two field goals and a safety. The safety came when the Rush tried to punt and the ball was snapped over punter Robbie Colley's head into the end zone.
Roanoke's touchdown was set up when another former Pulaski County standout, Carl Lewis, returned a kickoff 84 yards and Ranall White scored from 4 yards with 2:37 left in the game, marking the first time all season the Stonewalls' defense had been scored upon. The two-point conversion attempt failed and the Rush trailed 8-6.
Roanoke's defense stiffened and forced a punt to set up the game-winning drive.
Roanoke is off next week before traveling to Central Pennsylvania for a game on Sept. 2. The Rush's next home game is Sept.9 against the West Virginia Lightning.
